Beyond the Breath

Where does the desire to hold your breath underwater come from?  is a performative and cinematic exploration of this nostalgic question. 

At the same time, it is an existentialist reflection on the human experience of being overwhelmed by the enormity of nature and simultaneously feeling its beauty. This aesthetic experience, which can be characterized as the sublime in the Kantian sense, is only elucidated through an existentialist exploration, linking it to Heidegger's concept of the 'prelude to death'. 

The sense of overwhelm or frustration that a human being with a finite destiny inevitably feels when confronted with what is generally considered to be infinite becomes beautiful because the human being, forced to recognize his or her own end, reappraises his or her current state of existence in the context of temporality.  The work adopts an extremely cinematic grammar, presenting parallel situations relating to water in various states, deriving meaning from the conflict between them. The bored character who is completely surrounded by water and forgets even the desire to hold one's breath, and the struggle to hold one's breath, which is dramatically desired in shallow water that cannot be submerged, is itself a human life process, borrowing from Schopenhauer, who said that life is like a clockwork of pain and boredom.

 

The work is a collaboration with choreographer and performer Donna and was created to coincide with her performance of the same name. 

 

 

물 속에서 숨을 참고자 하는 욕망은 어디에서 비롯되는가. beyond the breath는 이 그리운 질문에 대한 퍼포먼스적, 영화적 탐험이다. 

동시에 이 작업은 자연의 거대함에 압도당하며 동시에 아름다움을 느끼는 인간적 경험에 대한 실존주의적 정초이다. 칸트적 의미에서의 숭고로 대변될 수 있는 이 미적 경험은, 실존주의적 탐구를 통해 하이데거의 '죽음에의 선구'개념과 연결지어지며 비로소 명쾌하게 설명된다. 

일반적으로 무한한 것으로 여겨지는 것들을 마주했을 때 유한한 운명을 가진 인간이 필연적으로 느낄 수 밖에 없는 압도감 혹은 좌절감이 아름다움으로 다가오는 것은, 스스로의 끝을 인식할 수 밖에 없는 상황에 처하게 된 인간이 시간성 속에서 자신의 현재 실존의 상태를 재인식하기 때문이다.  이 작업은 다양한 상태에서 물과 관계맺는 상황을 병렬적으로 제시하여, 그 사이에서 발생하는 conflict를 통해 의미를 도출해 내는 지극히 영화적 문법을 취한다. 물에 온전히 둘러 쌓여 호흡을 참고자 하는 욕구조차 잊어버린 채 권태로운 인물과, 도저히 잠길 수 없는 얕은 물에서 극적으로 욕구되어지는 호흡을 참는 것에 대한 욕망은, 삶은 고통과 권태의 시계추와 같다는 쇼펜하우어의 말을 빌려 그 자체로 인간의 삶의 과정이다.

 

이 작업은 안무가이자 퍼포머인 Donna와의 협업으로 진행된 작업으로, 동명의 퍼포먼스와 동시에 제작되었다.
